MANSFIELD, Mass. – In the last match of the regular season, Eastern Nazarene College clinched the No. 1 seed in the 2019 New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) Women's Volleyball Championship. The Lions were awarded the top seed after going unbeaten in conference play at 7-0. The Lions led the conference in kills per set (11.42) and assists per set (10.68), led by Ruth Aguilar's (Tegucigalpa, Honduras) league-leading 3.67 kills per set. With the top seed, Eastern Nazarene has secured a first round bye and will await the winner of the match-up between No. 4 Mitchell College and No. 5 Becker College.
New England College lands the second seed, and a first round bye, after finishing the regular season at 6-1. The Pilgrims have seen strong play from Tihani Ehia (Kaneohe, Hawaii), who averages 2.91 kills per set, which ranks among the top three in the league. New England College will host the winner of the No. 3 Elms College and No. 6 Dean College match-up.
Elms went 5-2 in conference play to pick up the three seed. With the No. 3 seed, Elms has earned the right to host their first round match-up on Tuesday, November 5. The Blazers have seen strong defensive play from Kianna Lozada (Bayamon, P.R.) who is averaging a league-best 5.46 digs per set. Elms will face-off against No. 6 Dean, who finished at 2-5. The Bulldogs expect Kait Anderson (Clinton, Conn.) to make an impact, as she is in the top ten in the league in kills per set, with 2.44.
Mitchell will host the second first round game, as they clinched the No. 4 seed with a 4-3 conference record. Veteran Cameron Childs (Gainesville, Fla.) will be a leader on the court defensively, averaging 4.50 digs per set, third in the league. She will match up against another defensive specialist in No. 5 Becker College's Joanna Bampi, (Peabody, Mass.) whose 5.22 digs per set is second in the league.
The winners of the semifinal games will then face off in the NECC Championship on Sunday, November 10 at the highest remaining seed.
