HOLYOKE, Mass. — The Southern Vermont College women's basketball team topped Bay Path University 80-52 Thursday night in New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) action at Holyoke Community College.
The Mountaineers are now 8-2 in league play, 10-7 overall on the season. BPU falls to 2-10 on the year and 2-6 in the conference.
SVC junior Kala MacKenzie (Fair Haven, Vermont) led all players with a season-best 20 points, adding seven rebounds and two steals in the win; she was 9-11 from the field on the night. Classmate and captain Amber Flagg (Windsor, Connecticut) was right behind with 18 points, seven rebounds and a game-best six assists while freshman Chloe Longe (Enosburg Falls, Vermont) added 13 points and six boards off the Southern Vermont bench.
Bay Path sophomore Briana Kujawski (Webster, Massachusetts) scored 19 points to lead the Wildcats, adding three rebounds and two assists in reserve time. Junior Dallas Jackson(Springfield, Massachusetts) provided 15 points and a game-best 10 rebounds for the double-double, swiping a game-high six steals in the effort.
Southern Vermont shot an even 50 percent from the floor on the night (32-64) while holding BPU to 28.4 percent (19-67). The Mountaineers connected on 6-of-11 attempts from three-point range while out-rebounding the Wildcats by a 55-30 margin. SVC owned a 40-26 advantage in points from the paint, and the visitors tallied a 14-10 edge on second-chance points.
A MacKenzie layup on the opening possession gave SVC an early lead, and the Mountaineers never looked back the rest of the way. Southern Vermont opened its advantage up to 22-8 in the first half on a three-pointer by freshman Danielle Simmons (Rensselaer, New York), and SVC continued to cruise through the remainder of action.
After taking a 34-16 lead into halftime, the Mountaineers came out of the break and continued to be efficient on the offensive end of the floor. A Longe layup made it 66-29 with 10:20 to play, the biggest SVC lead of the night. She then scored eight of the last 10 Southern Vermont points as the visitors walked out with their eighth NECC win of the season and second over the Wildcats this season.
Southern Vermont takes to the road Saturday for its next game, an 8 p.m. conference tilt at Lesley University, while Bay Path looks ahead to hosting Wheelock College on Saturday for a 1 p.m. tip-off.
