CHICOPEE, Mass. – The Elms College women's basketball team will travel to Ithaca, N.Y. to take on Ithaca College in NCAA Division III Championship First Round action on Friday, March 2.
Elms (20-8 overall) won the New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) for the first time in program history and punched its ticket to its first-ever NCAA Division III Championship. Ithaca (23-4 overall) won the Empire 8 Championship tournament to claim the league's automatic bid and will host the four-team regional at Ben Light Gymnasium Friday and Saturday, March 2 and 3. The other two teams in the pod are the University of Southern Maine and Bowdoin College.
Elms and Ithaca have never met on the hardwood, and the Blazers have also never played Southern Maine. Elms is 0-2 against Bowdoin, losing single games during the 1994-95 and 1995-96 seasons.
The Bombers are making their ninth appearance in the NCAA Division III playoffs and eighth in the past 12 years. This marks the second time Ithaca has been chosen to host an NCAA regional (2010); the Bombers hosted single games in 2001, 2002, 2003 and 2004.
