CHICOPEE, Mass.- Bay Path hosted New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) opponents Wheelock today in their Pink Out Field Hockey match falling 9-0 in the battle of the Wildcats.
How It Happened: Senior forward Katie Frade (Dartmouth, Mass.) topped all players scoring six goals for the Blue and Gold Wildcats including the first and eventual game winner at 3:30 on the clock.
Three other Wheelock Wildcats managed to score for the day. Sophomore forward Julia D'Onofrio (Salem, N.H.) netted the third goal in the 15th minute unassisted. Frade who single handedly scored the first two, had help from junior midfielder Alexis Mellis (East Longmeadow, Mass.) on the fourth goal and senior midfielder Alex LeBlanc (Atkinson, N.H.) on the sixth goal.
Coming out of the half, freshman midfielder Kat Bettencourt (Peabody, Mass.) added the seventh goal on a penalty stroke in the 55th minute of play. Frade again found the back of the net at 56:31 on the clock for the eighth goal. Sophomore forward Melanie Newberg (Raynham, Mass.) completed the scoring for Wheelock with the ninth goal at 69:26 on the clock.
Who Stood Out: Frade broke her own scoring record in the match by scoring six goals and recording 12 points. Wheelock's junior keeper Cassidy Smith (South Berwick, Maine) earned her third shut-out of the season and her second in as many games. Freshman Bettencourt scored her first goal of her career.
What It Means: Wheelock is now 4-9 overall and 3-1 in the NECC. They look to compete for the regular season title in their final two games.
