ONLINE – Southern Vermont College senior Ryan Serrato (Whittier, Calif.) has been recognized for being one of the best players in the country last week—getting selected Tuesday as the first baseman on D3baseball.com’s Team of the Week for the period ending February 24, 2019.
Serrato had an amazing start to the season on Saturday at SUNY Maritime. In his first at bat as a Mountaineer, he launched a two-run homer the opposite way; Serrato then tallied a double in each of his next two trips to the plate before being intentionally walked in the seventh inning with the go-ahead run at second.
The senior ended the day with a 2-3 performance at the dish in game two of the doubleheader while adding a walk and a run scored to his line. Serrato was also perfect in 16 total chances at first base throughout the day. He posted an .833 batting average, a 1.667 slugging percentage, and 10 total bases for the short week.
“I am really happy for Ryan and what he was able to do offensively in his first weekend for our team,” said SVC head coach Adam Skonieczki. “We are very fortunate to have a high-caliber player anchor the middle of our lineup, and we are excited to watch how the rest of the season plays out. It is also great to see our program get recognized on a national level, and it is a great accomplishment in the early stages of the year.”
Serrato and the Mountaineers had their four-game series scheduled for this upcoming weekend cancelled due to impending weather. Instead, the team will return to action Saturday, March 9 with a doubleheader against SUNY Old Westbury at Baseball Heaven.
