- Eagles, Lynx to Tangle For NECC Title Saturday -
NASHUA, N.H. – Backed by a match high 15 kills from sophomore
Chelsey Crawford (Westfield, Mass.) and an
eight-kill performance from sophomore Emily Travis
(Somerset, Mass.), the top seeded Daniel Webster College
women’s volleyball team stormed back to defeat fourth-seeded
Newbury College, 3-1 and earn a return trip to the New England
Collegiate Conference (NECC) women’s volleyball tournament
championship Friday night.
The Eagles (18-6) will meet second-seeded Lesley University (18-9), 3-0 winners over third-seeded Southern Vermont College in the night’s second semifinal matchup.
The championship will serve up on Saturday afternoon beginning at 2:00 p.m.
IN THE OPENER, the Eagles stormed back from a 25-21 set one loss in a rematch of last year’s tourney finalists. The Eagles answered with wins of 25-18, 25-10 and 25-22 to advance and continued to set a new program record for victories in a season.
Crawford hit .294 overall (15-5-34) and Travis sizzled with a
.412 clip (8-1-17) while sophomore Samantha Hill
(Hudson, N.H.) chipped in with seven kills and Jennifer
Finneran (Barnstead, N.H.) added six kills and three total
blocks.
Junior setter Caitlyn DePierro (Billerica, Mass.)
dished off 15 assists and pulled in 10 digs while junior libero
Amanda Wilson (Merrimack, N.H.) added 10 digs in
the back row.
Jessy Touron (Brockton, Mass.) led the Nighthawks (11-17) with 11 kills and added seven digs, while Tricia Corriveau (Coventry, R.I.) added eight kills and a match high 21 digs.
Stephanie Williams (Medford, Mass.) chipped in with six kills and setter Regina Sibilia (Agawam, Mass.) dished out 24 assists.
IN THE NIGHTCAP, sophomore Amanda McCracken
(Eldersburg, Md.) was simply stunning, registering a match high 20
kills against just three errors in 32 attempts to hit .531 as the
Lynx powered past the upstart Mountaineers, 25-20, 25-17 and
25-21.
Megan Ortwein (Shanghai, China) and
Maeghan Chadwick (Chelmsford, Mass.) added six
kills apiece and combined for 29 digs as the Lynx outhit SVC 38-24
in total kills.
Kate Miller registered 33 assists, three aces and
nine digs for the winners, while Cait Vandenburgh
(Swansea, Mass.) added 14 digs.
Ashliy Veliz (Glendale, Cal.) led the Mountaineers with 12 kills and 16 digs, while Joanna Hogue (Los Gatos, Cal.) knocked down eight kills and added 15 digs.
The Mountaineers finished 14-8 overall, their best season in history and enjoyed a remarkable turnaround after posting a combined record of 1-42 over the previous two seasons.
