PROGRAM

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Defending New England Collegiate Conference women’s soccer champions and top seed Lesley University will be making a return trip to the league finals after topping #4 seed Daniel Webster Thursday night in penalty kicks on a dreary night in Cambridge.

Double overtime ended in a 1-1 tie, and Lesley won the shootout, 3-2.

The Lynx controlled the majority of the early going, spending most of the first 25:00 on the Eagles half of the field and taking the game’s first seven shots. The Eagles, though, made sure shot No. 8 counted.

TC DiSantis (Hinsdale, Mass.) took the team’s only corner kick of the half from the right corner at 31:12, and three seconds later, junior midfielder Kacie Lang’s (Raymond, N.H.) header from in front of the left post found the back of the net. On the junior midfielder’s third goal of the season, Lang’s Eagles went into halftime with a 1-0 lead.

The second half opened similarly to the first, with Lesley getting off five of the first six shots, but this time the Lynx came away with something to show. Freshman Veronica Halen (San Diego, Calif.) found fellow frosh Jackee Sanchez (Fair Oaks Ranch, Calif.) on a pass down the middle, who at 58:18 lofted a shot over converging Eagles goalkeeper junior Amy Waller (Berlin, Mass.) to tie the contest 1-1.

After 90 minutes, the match remained tied, forcing overtime.

Sanchez earned the highest-quality scoring opportunity at 4:29. On an indirect kick from 40 yards, she struck what looked like it could be the game-winning goal, but it caromed off the crossbar and out of bounds. After 100 minutes and a16-2 Lynx advantage in shots, the game stayed tied.

Waller, meanwhile, was fantastic, improving as the night’s rainfall thickened. The junior corralled 10 saves through the first overtime and three in the first two minutes of double overtime, including one of the sliding variety and one leaping save on a Halen fire. She earned her 15th save of the night on a Halen shot in the closing seconds, carrying a fatigued Eagles team playing with only 11 players into penalty shots.

With the Eagles off to a 2-1 lead in penalty kicks, Halen and Sanchez each bested Waller to close out penalty kicks with the Lynx on top 3-2, advancing Lesley to the NECC Championship.

For Lesley, Corinne Dasti (Eastham, MA/Nauset) made one save, but more importantly held the Eagles to two goals in the shootout.

Daniel Webster finishes the 2010 campaign at 6-8-4 overall, while Lesley also picks up another tie with a 11-5-3 record.

#1 seed Lesley advances to take on #2 seed Mitchell in the NECC Championship on Saturday at 4 p.m. in Cambridge’s Edward Field.

#2 Mitchell 2, #3 Elms 0

PROGRAM

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College women’s soccer team scored two first-half goals en route to a 2-0 victory over Elms College in the semifinals of the NECC Championship on Thursday afternoon at Alumni Field.

Freshman Caley McClendon (Keene, N.H.) netted both goals for the Mariners. Mitchell (9-7-1 overall) advances to the title game for the second straight year and will play the winner of Thursday’s other semifinals match-up—either fourth-seeded Daniel Webster College or top-seeded Lesley University—on Saturday, November 6 at the site of the highest remaining seed.

The Mariners got on the scoreboard in the 25th minute when junior Angie Smith (Meriden, Conn.) dumped a ball into the corner where classmate Leslie Briggs (Dighton, Mass.) tracked it down. Briggs then crossed the ball to the far post where McClendon was waiting. She brought the ball to the ground with her body and quickly deposited a shot into the back of the net to give Mitchell a 1-0 advantage.

Just over five minutes later, Briggs took a shot from close range that Elms goalkeeper Hayley Zisk (Baldwinville, Mass.) deflected but couldn’t control. McClendon was there to clean up the rebound and gave the Mariners a two-goal cushion with her 11th tally of the season.

McClendon nearly made it a hat trick in the 38th minute, but Zisk made an incredible save with her leg to deny the attempt. The Blazers had chances of their own in the half, putting four out of five shots on goal, but Mitchell goalkeeper Kaylee Woodford (Niantic, Conn.) stopped every one.

The Mariners took the 2-0 lead into the halftime intermission and protected the margin in the second half. Despite being the aggressor with nine shots in the stanza, the Blazers could not finish on their scoring chances. Elms pushed everyone forward for the final 10 minutes but didn’t get anything past Woodford, who finished with eight saves to record her sixth shutout of the year.

The Blazers held a 14-13 edge in shots and a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks. Zisk finished with six saves in goal.

Elms ended its season with an overall record of 9-10-0.
