Mitchell Falls to Wheaton at NCAA Women's Soccer Championship First Round
WILLIMANTIC, Conn. – The Mitchell College women's soccer
team was eliminated from the 2010 NCAA Division III Women's Soccer
Championship on Saturday afternoon by a 4-0 final against Wheaton
College (Mass.) at the Mansfield Outdoor Complex on the campus of
Eastern Connecticut State University.
The Mariners represented themselves well in their first-ever NCAA
appearance. Mitchell hung tough in the first half and trailed 1-0
at intermission. Wheaton, which was ranked sixth in New England
entering the contest, regrouped at the half and netted three goals
over the final 45 minutes.
Freshman goalkeeper Kaylee Woodford was tested all afternoon. She
kept the Mariners in the contest with 12 saves, tying her career
high.
Mitchell ended the season with an overall record of 10-8-1
overall.
Sophomore striker Cassey Muse scored a goal and added an assist to
pace the Wheaton College offensive attack. The Lyons advanced to
the second round for the second-straight season and 10th time
overall.
Wheaton dominated the action in the first 45 minutes of play,
outshooting Mitchell 17-1. Sophomore midfielder Kierstin Luber gave
the Lyons an advantage they would not relinquish in the 36th
minute. The sophomore striker lifted a pass from Muse over the
Mariners' keeper to account for the lone marker of the first
frame.
Wheaton continued to apply the pressure in the second stanza,
scoring three insurance goals in the span of 16 minutes. Sophomore
midfielder Colleen Liffers flicked her sixth goal of the season
past Woodford in the 53rd minute. Junior midfielder Emily Vincunas
and Muse each registered a marker within seven minutes to provide
the final margin of victory.
Lyons' junior goalkeeper Erin Cawley needed make only one stop to
collect the win.
Wheaton (17-4-2 overall) will face host Eastern Connecticut State
University (16-0-4 overall) at 2 p.m. on Nov. 14. The Mariners see
their season end with an overall record of 10-8-7. The Warriors
defeated Worcester State University 1-0 in the other regional
match.
