The #1 Lesley University Lynx defeated the #4 Becker College Hawks 3-0 in semifinal action of the 2009 New England Collegiate Conference (NECC)Women's Soccer Championship. The #3 Mitchell College Mariners upset the #2 Elms College Blazers, the NECC reigning champions, 3-2 tonight at Leary Field in the 2009 Women's Soccer Championship semifinals.
Lesley to face Mitchell in NECC Championship, Defeating Becker 3-0
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - In a New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) semifinal match against Becker College (11-8, 5-3 NECC), the Lesley University (14-4-1, 8-0 NECC) women's soccer team were victorious 3-0 and moved on to the conference championship.
The Lynx will host Mitchell College on Saturday, November 7 at 1:00 pm after the Mariners defeated Elms College 3-2 in the other conference semifinal match of the day.
Lesley freshman Kate Ryder (GLASTONBURY, Conn./Mercy) put the Lynx up 1-0 in the 13th minute of the first half to kick off the scoring. Defender Tracy Potter (ACTON, Mass./Acton-Boxborough Regional) send a long untouched pass into Hawk territory which was redirected through the box by Jodi Fralick (WOBURN, Mass./Woburn). Ryder collected the ball and fired a shot to the right corner for the first goal of the match.
Becker looked to tie up the match in the 22nd minute as sophomore striker Alexandra Fernandes (TUCSON, Ariz./St. Gregory) headed a cross pass from point-blank range but Lynx goalkeeper Hailee Lowe (HAMILTON, Mass./Hamilton-Wenham Regional) made a diving save. Lowe would finish with five saves on the day without giving up a goal.
Later in the first half at 22:55, Lesley freshman Jamie Coyne (MANSFIELD, Mass./Bishop Feehan) scored her first career collegiate goal after one-timing a lead pass from teammate Jenna Fralick (WOBURN, Mass./Woburn) over Hawks keeper Shannon Tibbetts' (WARREN, Mass./Quaboag Regional) hands.
Tibbetts faced 9 shots on goal, making six saves and allowing three goals for the Hawks in net.
Following halftime, Lesley's Jodi Fralick scored her 30th goal of the season with an assist from Ryder at 59:20 to cap off the scoring for the Lynx.
Mitchell Sneaks By Elms, 3-2 In NECC Semifinal Contest
CHICOPEE, Mass. - Mitchell College broke a 2-2 tie in the 88th minute when a Mariners' shot deflected off an Elms College player and found its way into the back of the net, giving No. 3 Mitchell a hard-fought 3-2 win over the second-seeded Blazers in Thursday evening's New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) Championship tournament semifinal contest at Leary Field.
With the win, Mitchell improves to 8-10 overall and earns a berth in the 2009 NECC tournament championship game. The Mariners will play the winner of No. 4 Becker College and No. 1 Lesley University on Saturday, Nov. 7.
With the loss, Elms is eliminated from tournament action and ends its 2009 season 9-9-1 overall.
The first score of the game came in the 32nd minute of play when Mitchell capitalized on good ball movement in the 18-yard box that resulted in a goal from Leslie Briggs (Dighton, MA) on a pass from Kaitlyn McGinn (Millstone, NJ), giving the Mariners a 1-0 lead.
The Blazers quickly responded when freshman Cassandra Tetrault (Springfield, MA) found senior Serina Percoski (Westfield, MA) with a corner kick that Percoski was able to punch into the net to even the score at 1-1 at the 34:50 mark.
Elms forged ahead five minutes into the second stanza when senior Krystyna Gagne (Methuen, MA) passed the ball to sophomore Jen Killion (Cambridge, MA) who struck for the fifth time this season, giving the Blazers a 2-1 advantage.
Mitchell answered three minutes later when Angela Smith (Meridan, CT) delivered a pass to Nikki Hoxie (Winsted, CT) streaking up the right side of the field. Hoxie blasted a shot into the lower right corner of the net, knotting the game at 2-2.
The Mariners then went up 3-2 at the 87:43 mark thanks to the own goal that resulted in an Elms deflection into the net.
Mitchell goalkeeper Brittany O'Neil (Old Saybrook, CT) finished with four saves in the winning effort.
Elms outshot the Mariners 20-5 in the losing effort.
