Milton, Drescher Lead Wheelock Women's Basketball over Lesley, 52-32

CHESTNUT HILL, MA – Junior forward Keneisha Milton (Boston, MA/Wayland HS) and senior forward Kayla Drescher (Wallingford, CT) combined for 40 points to lead the Wheelock College women's basketball team over visiting Lesley University, 52-32, this evening in a New England Collegiate Conference contest at Brunelli Court on the campus of Pine Manor College in Chestnut Hill, MA. The Wildcats win their first game of the season to raise their record to 1-15, including a 1-9 mark in league play, while the Lynx fall to 0-14 and 0-9.

Wheelock never trailed in the game and owned a 61-38 rebounding advantage, while outscoring the visitors 32-6 in the paint.

Sophomore guard Sarah Apgar (Andover, NJ) converted a layup with 7:48 to play in the first half to pull Lesley to within 17-16, but it would be as close as it would get for the remainder of the contest. The Wildcats reeled off eight straight points to take a 25-17 margin with 2:59 showing in the first half, before taking a 27-18 lead into the intermission.

The Lynx closed to within 28-24 in the first five and a half minutes of the second half, but Wheelock pulled away with a torrid 18-2 stretch. The run was fueled by six points apiece from Drescher and Milton, who scored all of the Wildcats' points over the first 33:36 of action, to take a commanding 46-26 advantage with 3:48 remaining in the contest. Wheelock maintained its lead for the rest of the game.

The Wildcats scored five of the game's first six points, before Lesley freshman forward Carrie Fieger (Simsbury, CT) knocked down a three-pointer at the 18:23 mark of the opening half to cut the deficit to 5-4. Wheelock opened its lead to 13-6 with 13:43 left in the half, thanks to an 8-2 burst, paced by six points from Milton. The Wildcats later maintained a 15-8 margin with 12:36 showing on the first half clock, before the Lynx scored eight unanswered points to pull to within 17-16.

Milton became the first player in Wheelock history to register a 20-20 effort with a career-high 24 points on 11-18 from the floor in addition to 21 rebounds. She also added an assist, a steal and a blocked shot. Drescher finished with a double-double of her own, scoring 16 points and grabbing 10 boards to go with four assists and a block. Junior guard Kailah Simon (Norwalk, CT) contributed with four points, a game-high five assists and added a blocked shot. Freshman guard Lauren Lapierre (Belchertown, MA) netted her first collegiate point, while senior forward Morgan Perry (Hartford, CT) scored a career-best three points.

Sophomore guard Emily Fleming (Medford, MA) led Lesley with 13 points in addition to four rebounds, an assist and a game-high four steals, while Apgar netted eight points, pulled down three boards, handed out an assist, came up with a pair of steals and blocked a shot.

The Wildcats will be in action again on Saturday, January 28 when they travel to New London, CT to take on NECC foe Mitchell College at 2:00 p.m., while the Lynx play again on January 26 when they host Regis College (MA) at 8:00 p.m. at Buckingham, Browne & Nichols gymnasium.
