Wildcat Basketball and SAAC Support WBCA Pink Zone Initiative
LONGMEADOW, Mass.The Bay Path Student-Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC) and the women's basketball team hosted a "Pink Zone" game on Thursday, February 28th. The Bay Path effort was conducted in conjunction with the Women's Basketball Coaches Association's (WBCA) "Pink Zone" initiative.
Bay Path raised $424.00 in the effort. All of the proceeds will benefit the Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund.
SAAC raised money and awareness by setting up a table during lunch and at basketball games, where they sold pink t-shirts, beads and ribbons. Fans were also asked to wear pink during the game on Thursday.
Despite outscoring the Hawks in the second half, the Wildcats of Bay Path were unable to take the lead falling 47-34 to Becker in New England Collegiate Conference women's basketball action. Senior center Kathleen Rodrigue (West Stewartstown, N.H.) topped Bay Path with nine points and seven boards. Although the Wildcats finished with a loss on the evening they were proud of their fans and fellow student-athletes coming out and supporting their WBCA Pink Zone night for breast cancer awareness.
Leading all scorers was the Hawks' junior forward Heidi Miller (Sanbornton, N.H.) with ten points while pulling down seven boards. Miller went 2-for-2 from downtown. Two other Hawks scored nine points each including senior guard Shannon Tibbetts (Warren, Mass.) and freshman guard Katelyn Cavanaugh (Belchertown, Mass.). Tibbetts running the point also chipped in seven rebounds, six assists and two steals.
The Wildcats started off very slow allowing Becker to outscore Bay
Path by twenty points heading into the locker room with 36-16 on
the scoreboard. Bay Path was able to shut down the Hawks
offense in the second half scoring 18 points to Becker's 11 for the
night.
Coming off the bench for the Hawks freshman center Theresa Boulier (Eddington, Maine) has six points, eight rebounds and three blocks. Also scoring six was senior guard Courtney Fiske (Westfield, Mass.).
Bay Path was without starting seniors Jessica Hunt (Madison, Conn.) and Christina Calabrese (Hamilton, N.J.). Defensively fellow senior Ashley Cimmino (Westfield, Mass.) led all rebounders with ten boards while adding seven points, four steals and two assists. Two other Wildcats chipped in seven points each junior guard Katie Begin (Weare, N.H.) and freshman guard Brittany Alexander (Enfield, Conn.).
Rounding off the scoring for the evening was sophomore
late starter Megan Caputo (Springfield, Mass.)
with four points.
Becker is now 4-13 overall and 4-4 in the NECC, while Bay Path
falls to 3-14 on the season and 0-8 in conference play. Bay Path
will host Southern Vermont on Saturday, January 30th at
5:00 p.m. for Senior Night.
The Wildcats will donate all of tonight's proceeds from selling
Pink Zone T-Shirts to the Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund. The WBCA
Pink ZoneTM initiative is a global, unified effort for
the Women's Basketball Coaches Association's (WBCA) nation of
coaches to assist in raising breast cancer awareness on the court,
across campuses, in communities and beyond.
