The 2011 NECC All-Conference Softball Teams Announced: Dorval, Knox and Benway Earn NECC Top Awards

ATTLEBORO, Mass. – Eight conference schools were represented on 2011 New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) Softball All-Conference Team, it was announced today by Commissioner Del Malloy. In addition to the All-NECC honors, four separate major individual award winners and the team sportsmanship award were also voted upon and selected this week.

Lesley freshman utility/pitcher Jennifer Dorval (Franklin, N.H.), a management major, was named the 2011 NECC Softball Player and Rookie of the Year. Dorval helped her team to a 27-6 overall record and 16-0 conference finish earning the top seed in the 2011 NECC Softball Championship. In conference play, Dorval garnered the batting title with a sizzling .614 average and led all NECC players in slugging percentage with a .909 average.  She also led the NECC in hits (27), RBI (27), doubles (10), and total bases (40). She was second in on-base percentage (.646), ERA (0.64), opposing batting average (.149),  hits allowed (17), runs allowed (4), earned runs allowed (3), third in strike outs (62), and fifth in wins (7).  She was 7-0 in conference play hurling 33.0 innings.  Overall, she also leads the NECC with a .592 batting average. She currently has 45 hits, 23 runs, 36 RBI, 10 doubles and one homerun. On the mound, Dorval (13-2) is second only to her teammate Knox with a 1.68 ERA, six shut-outs, 113 strike-outs and only 33 walks.

The Lesley Lynx earned the top seed for the 2011 NECC Softball Championship. Lesley University junior pitcher Cassandra Knox (Sea Cliff, N.Y.) nabbed the 2011 NECC Softball Pitcher of the Year for her perfect 8-0 record in conference play.  Knox, a child and family studies major with a focus in early intervention and a minor in education, led all hurlers in the NECC with a perfect 0.00 ERA for her 40.2 innings pitched. In conference play, she tossed eight shutouts fanning 63 batters, while only walking 11 batters. Overall, Knox (12-4) is also top among NECC players with a 1.30 ERA. She tossed 86.1 innings giving up only 16 earned runs on 64 hits. She struck out 92 while only scattering 42 walks.

Dorval and Knox were joined by their head coach Jen Benway for top conferen ce honors. Benway was named the 2011 NECC Softball Coach of the Year. She led the Lynx to a 27-6 overall record and a perfect 16-0 mark in conference play this season. Lesley earned the honor to host The 2011 NECC Softball Championship at the #1 seed. Benway has led the Lynx to win both the 2009 and 2010 championship title.  And this past weekend took the 2011 Championship title.

The Mountaineers of Southern Vermont College, led by first year head coach Leanne Baker, were honored as the 2011 NECC Team Sportsmanship Award recipients. The Mountaineers finished ninth in the conference at 0-16 with a tough season record of 0-22.

Voting for the All-NECC team and each of the major awards was conducted among all NECC Softball coaches.

Joining Dorval and Knoxon All-NECC First Team were fellow Lynx senior (OF) Alyson Durben (Stow, Mass.), junior (OF) Gabrielle Brixey (Coalinga, Calif.) and sophomore (DP) Emily Mangiaratti (Amherst, Mass.);  Newbury freshman (1B) Joanna Robie (Andover, Mass.);  Daniel Webster senior (2B) Amy Waller (Berlin, Mass.);  Elms’ sophomore (3B) Rachel Butt (Agawam, Mass.), junior (SS) Jenna Lipscomb (Cambridge, Mass.) and senior pitcher Destinee Meeker (Bantam, Conn.); Mitchell senior (OF) Jen Bordonaro (Winsted, Conn.) and Southern Vermont junior catcher Alyssa Davis (Lyndonville, Vt.).

Second team honors went to Mitchell’s sophomore (1B) Tiffany Person (Waterbury,  Conn.), junior (2B) Nicole Hoxie (Winsted, Conn.) and junior pitcher Marissa Thomas (New London, Conn.); Lesley junior (3B) Jenna Fralick (Woburn, Mass.);  Becker senior (SS) Felicia Laufer (Salem, Conn.); Elms’ junior (OF) Marlene DiRaimo (Cranston, R.I.) and sophomore catcher Sarah Buckley (Wilbraham, Mass.); along with Newbury’s  freshman (OF) Sam Rios (Bronx, N.Y.) and sophomore (OF) Brittany Stracher (Dudley, Mass.).

Six players received honorable mention honors including Bay Path’s freshman catcher Mercedes Griffith (Malden, Mass.), freshman (3B) Keelin Dougherty (Northfield, N.H.) and freshman (SS) Emily Serrano (North Adams, Mass.); along with Newbury’s junior (2B) Teressa Fariolo (East Longmeadow, Mass.) and junior (SS) Theresa Hylinski (Stratford, Conn.); and Becker sophomore (3B) Talan Barron (Methuen, Mass.).
