NEW LONDON, Conn. - The Mitchell College softball team (14-16-1) shut out Wheelock College this afternoon 8-0 and advanced to the NECC Semifinals this weekend which are hosted by #1 seed Lesley University. Freshman shortstop Stacey Suplicki (New London, Conn.) led the team, as she went 2-for-3 and drove in four of Mitchell's eight runs.
The Mariners jumped ahead early, as they scored three runs in the first inning and four runs in the second inning. The three runs were scored in the first inning on a hit batsman, two errors, and a two-RBI single by Suplicki. In the second inning, Lindsey Donelin (Niantic, Conn.) reached on a fielder's choice, and Nikki Hoxie (Winsted, Conn.) singled. Sara Krolikowski (Bristol, Conn.) then hit a two RBI single to score Hoxie and Donelin. Suplicki hit her second two-RBI single of the game to drive in the two remaining runs.
Donelin finished the game 2-for-3 with two runs scored, while Liz Roy (Jewett City, Conn.) went 2-for-4 with two runs and one RBI.
Kristina Torres (Groton, Conn.) was on the mound today for the Mariners, and she held the Wildcats scoreless. She pitched six innings and only gave up two hits and two walks, and from the second to the fifth innings she retired 12 straight batters.
Wheelock senior hurler Stacy Seidner (Pembroke, N.H.) sufferd the loss for her 5.2 inning pitched. She gave up ten hits and eight runs-only five earned. Seidner and teammate sophomore Nicole Zina (Bristol, R.I.) notched the Wildcats lone hits on the day.
The Mariners advance in the NECC tournament to face #2 Elms College on Friday, May 1 at noon and the games will be played at UMass Boston and are hosted by #1 Lesley University.
#4 Daniel Webster 7, #4 Bay Path 2
NASHUA, N.H. - Theresa DiSantis (Hinsdale, Mass.) went 2 for 3 knocking in two runs and Amy Waller (Berlin, Mass.) added a two-run double as the fourth-seeded Daniel Webster College softball team posted a 7-2 victory over fifth-seeded Bay Path College in the opening round of the inaugural New England Collegiate Conference softball championship tournament Tuesday afternoon at Eagle Field.
The victory advances the Eagles (18-14-1) into the final four double-elimination round which begins Friday. Top seed Lesley University will host the remainder of the tournament on the campus of UMass-Boston.
The Eagles will face Lesley in the first game at 10:00 a.m. Should the Eagles win, they would play again at 4:00 p.m. A loss would place them in a loser's bracket contest at 2:00 p.m.
The tournament continues Saturday and concludes Sunday if necessary.
The victory was just the second post-season win ever for the Eagles and first since 1997. Daniel Webster is making its first post-season appearance since 2003.
Rookie Sam Langlois (Raymond, N.H.) went the distance on the mound for DWC, spinning a two-hitter, allowing two runs (one earned) over seven innings, striking out nine. Langlois (13-7) won for the 11th time in her last 12 outings.

Winter stroked a two-out single in the third to score DiSantis, who had singled and stole both second and third.
Langlois ran into brief trouble in the top of the fourth, walking four of the first five batters for a 6-1 game, but settled down to strikeout Kaitlin Begin and induced a Sarah Wright pop out to Waller.
Varricchio singlehandedly made it 7-1 in the fourth, getting clipped with two out. She followed by stealing second and advanced home on a throwing error while stealing third.
Gunseth closed out the scoring doubling in Begin in the top of the seventh.
