The Nighthawks of Newbury and the Blazers of Elms College advanced to the New England Collegiate Conference Championship Game by both sweeping their opponents 3-0 tonight in Brookline, MA. The title game, which will take place tomorrow afternoon at 2:00pm will be a rematch of the 2009 Championship in which the Blazers defeated Newbury 3-1.
#1 Newbury 3, #4 Southern Vermont 0
Newbury College defeated Southern Vermont 3-0 (25-19, 25-17, 25-17)and with the fall Southern Vermont ends their season 2-6 in NECC and 5-18 overall as Newbury moves ahead with a 8-0 record in the NECC and 22-11 overall entering tomorrow's match facing Elms College for the NECC Championship Title.
Newbury seniors James Beck (Havre De Grace, MD) and Matt Talamantes (Los Angeles, CA) lead the Nighthawks to the victory tallying 10 and 9 kills respectively. Talamantes also lead with 7 digs and a game high 30 assist. Teammate Mike Biuso (South Setauket, N.Y.) and freshman Chris Demarco (Salem, N.H.)both recorded a team high 8 digs in tonight's match.
The Southern Vermont Mountaineers received an outstanding performance from freshman Anthony Barahona (Eagle Rock, CA) who recorded a game high 15 kills and 8 digs. Teammate Connor Murray (Litchfield, Conn./Litchfiled HS) contributed 5 kills in tonight's match, while Anthony Ayala (Pico Rivera, CA) recorded a team high 20 assist and 10 digs overall.
#2 Elms 3, #3 Daniel Webster 0
The Elms College Blazers defeated the Eagles of Daniel Webster College tonight 3-0 (25-17, 25-20, 25-16) to advance to the NECC title game for the second time in the short history of the NECC.
Elms was paced by NECC standout Yonalvy Acosta (Holyoke, MA) who totaled a game high 11 kills on the night, with an impressive .500 hitting percentage, while teammate Bryson Rainey (Brookline, MA) added 9 kills on 13 attempts for .462 hitting percentage. Daniel Webster's Joe Walz (E. Longmeadow, MA) matched a game high 11 kills in the loss, while teammate Chris Shannon (Ronkonkoma, NY) added 9 of his own.
With the victory Elms moves on to the Championship game for the second time in program history and will again face the Nighthawks of Newbury College.
