Mitchell Tops NECC Men’s Tennis Preseason Poll
ATTLEBORO, Mass. – Mitchell College has been tabbed as the
preseason favorite to capture the New England Collegiate Conference
men’s tennis championship, it was announced today by
Commissioner Del Malloy. Voting for the preseason poll was
conducted among the NECC’s head men’s tennis
coaches.
Five of the nine NECC members sponsor men’s tennis.
The Mitchell Mariners (10-0, 8-0 NECC), 2009 & 2010 NECC
Men’s Tennis Champions, received all five first-place votes
in the 2011 NECC preseason poll. The Mariners are led by
Rick Carmona, 2009 NECC Men’s Tennis Coach
of the Year. Mitchell returns seven players and six st
arters.
The Mariners return three top players including the two-time NECC Player of the Year junior Kyle Carmona (Norwich, Conn.) who went 9-0 in both singles and doubles play last season. Fellow first team all-conference members sophomore Rocco Devona (Waterford, Conn.), the 2010 NECC Rookie of the Year, and junior Tyler Engleberg (Niantic, Conn.), 2009 NECC Rookie of the Year, will round off the top three Mariner positions.
Lesley University took the second spot with 33 points. Becker College placed third on the poll with 31 points. Newbury College had 24 points for fourth place, while Wheelock College rounded out the poll with 22 points.
