Carmona, Newton and Small Grab Final NECC Weekly Honors
PLAYER OF THE WEEK - Mitchell College freshman Kyle Carmona (Norwich, Conn.) helped the Mariners remain perfect at 11-0 overall and 8-0 in NECC play, earning the 2009 NECC Inaugural Tennis Title. For the week, Carmona defeated Becker's Charles Hear in their final NECC match 6-3, 6-1 in #1 singles action, while partnering with Dan Dworetsky in #1 doubles action winning 8-2. Carmona did not play in the 7-2 win over Anna Maria. In 2009 NECC Tournament action, he became victorious at the #1 singles flight and the #1 doubles flight grabbing the individual title and #1 doubles title.
ROOKIE OF THE WEEK - Lesley University freshman David Newton (Hamden, Conn.) helped his team finish the season 5-3 in conference play and 6-6 overall sharing a piece of the 2009 NECC Runners-Up Award. For the week, Newton went 1-1 in #1 singles action against conference play Becker and Wheelock. Newton won his semifinals flights at both the #1 singles and #1 doubles defeating Wheelock's Wilson Chang 8-2 and with partner Sonny Ljutica taking Becker's Charles Heard and Snjezan Telbak 8-2. Newton only fell to NECC Player of the Year Carmona in the flighted championships.
ROOKIE OF THE WEEK - Mitchell College freshman Andrew Small (Westerly, R.I.) helped the Mariners remain perfect at 11-0 overall and 8-0 in NECC play, earning the 2009 NECC Inaugural Tennis Title. Small made one of only a few appearances this season for Mitchell against Anna Maria this week winning at #4 singles 6-1, 6-0 and teaming with Adam Samuels at the #2 doubles for an 8-4 victory. Small was a last minute replacement for the Mariners' in the #2 singles flight, at which he upset some tough competition grabbing the individual #2 flight title winning his semifinals 6-1, 6-0 taking Becker's Snjezan Telbak and then rolling through Lesley's Sonny Ljutica 8-6.
