Babson Leads First Round at the 2011 NECC Men's Golf Championship

BROCKTON, Mass.—The Babson College men's golf team shot a season-low nine-over par 289 to take a nine-shot lead after the first day of the 2011 NECC Golf Championship at D.W. Field Golf Club in Brockton this afternoon. Elms College is nine shots back after shooting a 298, and Springfield College at 304, is 15 shots back. A total of 13 players carded sub-80 rounds on a picture-perfect fall afternoon on the 6,042 yard, par 70 course.

The Beavers were led by the 2010 NECC Championship medalist, senior captain Joe Young (Westwood, Mass.) who shot a one-under par 69 to take a two-shot lead. Young made three birdies, all on the front nine, and two bogeys en route to his best round of the season. Junior Wesley Tryhane (Stamford, Conn.) sits two shots back after firing a one-over par 71. Tryhane overcame two early bogeys, playing the final 14 holes at one-under par. Sophomores Will Weimar (Nesconset, N.Y.) and Kenny Chong (North Bergen, N.J.) chipped in shooting a 73 and 76, respectively for the Babson. Weimar is currently tied for fourth-place, while Chong is tied for eighth-place.

Elms College, the defending NECC Champions, used a balanced effort, placing four golfers in the top eight. Leading the way for the Blazers was first-year Nicholas Smith (Enfield, Conn.) and his two-over par 72. Smith made a birdie and two bogeys on each nine, and is in third-place, just three shots behind Young. Junior Philip Rurak (Wilbraham, Mass.) and sophomore Kyle Simard (Thorndike, Mass.) both stand at five-over par, tied for sixth-place, after opening the weekend with a pair of 75's. Rurak and Simard both earned All-NECC First Team accolades last year. Sophomore Henry Fall (Harpswell, Maine), a Second Team All-NECC honoree, carded a six-over par 76 for the Blazers, and is tied for eighth place.

Springfield College, the 2008 champions, were led by junior Kyle DiFranco (East Longmeadow, Mass.) who shot a three-over par 73. He was backed up by senior Thomas Sangeloty (Unionville, Conn.), Christopher Vincent (Norwich, Conn.), and junior Ryne McEvoy (Accord, N.Y.), who all shot 77 and are tied for 10th place.

Becker College, led by an 80 from first-year John Lento (Estero, Fla.), is fourth with a team total of 337, and are followed closely by Newbury College, with a of 338. First-year David Hart (Keene, N.H.) carded an 80 to lead the Nighthawks. Daniel Webster is currently in sixth-place, 12 shots behind Newbury, and the Eagles were led by senior Michael Fuller's (Chelmsford, Mass.) 77. Fuller is tied for 10th place after day one.

The final round will commence tomorrow morning at 11:30 a.m. with golfers going out in foursomes from the first tee. The winner of the 2011 Championship will receive and automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. The site of the 2012 Division III NCAA Tournament has yet to be determined.
