Springfield College Leading after Day One of the Inaugural New England Collegiate Conference Golf Championships

CHICOPEE, Mass.-Today marks the first ever New England Collegiate Conference Championships play with the Springfield Pride taking the day one lead in the inaugural 2008 NECC Men's Golf Championships.  The championships are being held by Elms College at the Chicopee Country Club with a Par 71 course measuring 6,742 yards.

The Pride are led by senior duffers' Greg Levings (Averill Park, N.Y.) and Michael LaJoie (Enfield, Conn.) who each shot five-over par (76) for the first round lead.

Springfield is in first place with a team score of 324. The Mariners of Mitchell pulled off the second place day one round shooting a team 337, while the Engineers' of Massachusetts Institute of Technology were only 22 strokes behind the leaders with a first round score of 346. The Hawks of Becker placed fourth today with a 350 team score and the host Elms Blazers were a close fifth place only six strokes behind with a 356 tally. The Eagles of Daniel Webster finished 6th in round one with a 365 team score. The Newbury Nighthawks rounded out the team scoring with an 18-hole team score of 399 for day one action.

Levings and LaJoie each shot low round of 76 to tie for first place. Freshman Mariner Michael Lapore (Centerville, Mass.) was only one stroke behind at 77 for the 3rd place score after his first 18 holes. The Blazers' local sophomore duffer Andrew Sullivan (West Springfield, Mass.) shot a 78 to earn today's fourth place spot. Rounding out the top five was the Engineers' senior Ted Keith (Acton, Mass.) who shot an 80 first round score.

The Hawks top golfer was freshman Tim Staley (Chicago, Ill.), who is currently tied for 9th place with an 83. The Eagles' are led by senior David Jamieson (Buzzard's Bay Mass.). Jamieson is in 11th place by himself with an 18-hole score of 85. Junior Nighthawk Matthew Vitukevich (Saugus, Mass.) is topping his team at 21st place shooting a 93 first round.

Tomorrow will be the final round of the 2008 NECC Men's Golf Championships. Tee times will begin promptly at 10:06 a.m. off the first hole with the #1's of  Springfield, Mitchell and MIT forming a the first threesome to tee off on Sunday. Concluding tournament play, the NECC office will announce the 2008 All-Conference team along with Player of the Year, Rookie of the Year, Coach of the Year and the Team Sportsmanship honors. The top two teams will be named the 2008 NECC Golf Champions and the 2008 Golf Runners-Up.
