2010 NECC Men's Basketball Championship Program

LEICESTER, Mass.-- #1Becker College defeated #5 Lesley University 85-53, while #2 Elms College outlasted #3 Wheelock College 66-62 in the 2010 New England Collegiate Conference men's basketball semifinal action. Becker and Elms will face each other in the championship game tomorrow at 2:00 p.m.

Leicester, Mass.- Becker College defeated Lesley University 85-53 in New England Collegiate Conference men's basketball action. With the win the Hawks advance to the conference championship game tomorrow afternoon at 2:00pm at Becker College.

In the first half, the two teams exchanged the lead three times before DeJohn Joseph-Exum (New London, Conn.) put the Hawks in front for good with a lay up with 8:36 remaining.  The lay up propelled the Hawks on a 20 to nine run to end the half. Junior Rajai Leggett (New Haven, Conn.) led all scorers with 13 first-half points. Matt Petrides (Belchertown, Mass.) came off the bench to hit three-three pointers for the Hawks. Lesley University was led by junior forward Jesus Trejo (Methuen, Mass), who scored seven points, including his 1,000th career point.

The Hawks came out of the locker room on fire as they opened the second half on a 15 to four run. Becker had as much as a 38 point lead on their way to their second straight conference finals. The Hawks finished the game with four players in double figures. Leggett scored a game high 19 points. Junior point guard DeJohn Joseph-Exum scored ten points in the second half, on his way to 18 for the game.  Freshman Mudia Osemwegie (Roselle, NJ) chipped in with 12 points and Terrance Favors(Boston, Mass) finished with ten. With the win the Hawks improved to 18-8 overall.

Lesley was led by senior guard Alex Green (Baton Rouge, La), who scored 17 points.  Jesus Trejo chipped in with 11 points and a game high nine rebounds. Freshman point guard John Sanchez (Carson, Calif.) finished with ten points. With the loss Lesley's season ends with a record of 9-18.

#2 Elms 66, #3 Wheelock 62

Leicester, Mass.- Elms College defeated Wheelock College 66-62 in New England Collegiate Conference semifinal men's basketball action to advance to the championship game against Becker College at 2:00pm tomorrow.

In the first half the two teams exchanged leads six times. At one point Elms had a six point advantage; which was the largest advantage in the first half. Senior Sherard Robbins (Malden, Mass.) hit a jumper with 00:28 remaining to give Wheelock a 33-32 lead at halftime. Robbins carried the Wildcats with eight first half points.  Junior Juan Alverio (Toa Baja, Puerto Rico) came off the bench to lead Elms with eight points in the first half. Wheelock shot just under 45% from the field in the first half while Elms shot just under 42%.

Wheelock took control early in the second half, jumping out to a 9 point lead. The second seeded Elms Blazers refused go down easily. Wheelock held a 58-62 lead with 3:19 remaining before Javon Mathis (East Hartford, Conn.) scored a lay-up cutting the advantage in half. The Blazers completed their comeback when New England Collegiate Conference Player of the Year Juan Maldonado (Holyoke, Mass) fed Brittain Purcelle (Tarrytown, NY) for a jumper at the top of the key, tying the game at 62 all. Maldonado hit two free throws with 00:32 remaining to seal the win for the Blazers.

Sherard Robbins led all scorers with 20 points. He was the lone Wildcat in double figures. Max Kaim (Cypress Bay, Fla) helped keep Wheelock in the game with five aggressive steals. The Wildcats finished the season with a record of 16-11.

Elms College had three players in double figures. Juan Maldonado and Javon Mathis carried the Blazers with 14 points each. Brittain Purcelle chipped in with ten points. The Blazers improved to 20-6 on the season.
