2008 NECC Field Hockey Championships Pairings Announced

ATTLEBORO, Mass.-Becker has claimed the top seed for the 2008 New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) Field Hockey Championship, which begins with semifinal matchups on campus sites Tuesday afternoon at 2:00/ 6:00 p.m. The Hawks (10-9 overall) earned the top spot in the upcoming NECC tournament after posting a perfect 8-0 conference record.

The next three spots in the tournament finished tied for second place after final conference play. The Daniel Webster Eagles (5-8 overall), the Elms Blazers (5-12 overall) and the Wheelock Wildcats (4-14 overall) all wrapped up the 2008 conference campaign with a 4-4 record.

As specified in NECC field hockey championship guidelines, a three-way tiebreaker was applied to determine seeding for Daniel Webster, Elms and Wheelock.

In the initial step, each of the three teams' records against the other two teams was examined.  All three teams were 1-1.

In the second step, the three teams' records against all other NECC teams in descending order of the conference standings was examined.  All three teams had identical records against each of the other two conference teams.

In the third step, the three teams' records against common non-conference opponents were examined.  There were only two common opponent's that they all played Lassell and Regis. They all lost to Lasell while both Daniel Webster and Elms defeated Regis and Wheelock lost to Regis. So after this step, Wheelock claims the #4 seed.

In the fourth step, Daniel Webster and Elms records against all conference and non-conference opponents with a .500 winning percentage or better were examined.  There were no wins against any opponent's with a .500 or better winning percentage.

In the fifth step, the overall winning percentage was taken in to consideration. Daniel Webster (.385) claims the #2 seed with a higher winning percentage than Elms (.294) in overall play. Elms rounds out the bracket as the #3 seed for the tournament.

The 2008 Field Hockey Championship semi-finals will be hosted at the high seeds' campus. #1 Becker will host #4 Wheelock at a 6:00 p.m. start time under lights. #2 Daniel Webster will host #3 Elms at a 2:00 p.m. face-off.
