The 2011 NECC All-Conference Baseball Team Announced: Apostolo, Grenier and Kupiec Earn NECC Top Awards
ATTLEBORO, Mass. – Five conference schools were
represented on 2011 New England Collegiate Conference (NECC)
Baseball All-Conference Team, it was announced today by
Commissioner Del Malloy. In addition to the All-NECC honors, four
separate major individual award winners and the team sportsmanship
award were also voted upon and selected this week.
Mitchell College junior pitcher, designated hitter and outfielder
John Apostolo (Queens, N.Y.), a sport management
major, was named the 2011 NECC Baseball Player of the Year. In
conference play, Apostolo grabbed the batting title leading the way
with a .581 average, a 1.032 slugging percentage and a .620 on-base
percentage. He also leads in hits (36), RBI (30), home runs (6) and
total bases (64). Apostolo played and started in 17 contests,
having 12 multiple hits games and seven multi-RBI contests. He hit
safely in all but one conference game and had RBI in all but four.
Overall he ranks amongst the nation’s leaders in batting
average (.527), slugging percentage (1.000), runs scored per game
(37), RBI (48) and on-base percentage (.574).
Apostolo also was honored as the 2011 NECC Baseball Pitcher of the
Year for his perfect 6-0 record in conference play. He led
the NECC in wins, innings pitched (39.2), strikeouts (47), and
games started (6). In conference play he was fourth overall with a
2.27 ERA, he was the only NECC pitcher to have a win against every
conference opponent. He was a three-time conference player of the
week and one-time pitcher of the week. Apostolo allowed one earned
run or fewer in all but one start. He had a strikeout/walk ratio of
better than 4:1. Overall, Apostolo was second among NECC hurlers
with a 2.89 ERA. He led league players in innings pitched (56.0),
strikeouts (68), wins (8), games started (10) and best record at
8-1.
Becker College freshman pitcher Matt Grenier
(Rochester, N.H.) was awarded the 2011 NECC
Baseball Rookie of the Year for his first season of collegiate
play. Grenier, a sports management major, earned rookie of the week
honors twice this season. He helped lead the Hawks to two rebound
game wins over tough conference opponents in Daniel Webster (1-0)
and Mitchell (3-1). He is in the NECC top ten for ERA (3.62),
second only to, NECC Player and Pitcher of the Year Apostolo for
wins at 4-0. He played and started in five games hurling 27.1
innings, fanning 17 while scattering 12 walks. Overall, he was
second in wins with a perfect 6-0 record.
The Newbury College Nighthawks first-year head coach
Kraig Kupiec was named the 2011 NECC Baseball
Coach of the Year. Kupiec led the Nighthawks to a 9-9 conference
record and 18-7 overall finish finishing in 5th place
just one spot shy of a conference tournament spot. Newbury has
previous won the 2009 and 2010 NECC Team Sportsmanship Award.
The Eagles of Daniel Webster College, led by head coach
J.P. Pyne, were honored as the 2011 NECC Team
Sportsmanship Award recipients. The Eagles finished tied for third
with Southern Vermont with a 10-8 conference record. They
earned the #3 seed of for the 2011 NECC Baseball Championship.
Overall, they are 19-13 heading into the conference tournament.
Pyne was named the 2009 & 2010 Coach of the Year previously and
led the Eagles to the 2010 championship title.
Voting for the All-NECC team and each of the major awards was
conducted among all NECC Baseball coaches.

Keith Kandel (Fresno, Calif.) and Newbury junior
(C) Patrick Curry (Hampstead, N.H.).
Five players were named honorable mention including Becker’s junior (DH) Weston Meehan (Thomson, Ga.) and freshman (1B) Mike Marcello (West Haven, Conn.); Mitchell’s senior (2B)Drew Rossi (Jessup, Penn.) and sophomore (3B) Osmer Collado (New York, N.Y.); and Daniel Webster sophomore (SS) Rich Lizotte (West Warwick, R.I.).
