BENNINGTON, Vt. - In the New England Collegiate Conference Baseball Playoffs the Becker College Hawks beat the Elms College Blazers to win the Inaugural Championship 13-5 at Epstein Field. Sophomore Jairo Valdez (Lynn, Mass.) led the Hawks offensively going 5-for-6 and scoring three runs while freshman pitcher Cody Harmes (Strasburg, Pa.) got the complete game win.
Elms came out strong with three in the first inning but with their tanks running on empty the Hawks kept chipping away. A four run eighth inning for Becker gave them a nine run cushion heading into the ninth.
Freshmen Joe Corey (Billerica, Mass.), Weston Meehan (Thomson,
Ga.), and sophomore Keith Kandel (Fresno, Calif.) all hit great on
the day for the Hawks. Corey went 3-for-4 knocking in four, Meehan
went 3-for-5 jacking two solo shots, and Kandel had three base
knocks to round out the offensive blast.
The Blazers were led by freshmen Brendan Cordeiro (Berkley, Mass.) and Nicolino Iavicoli (Hampden, Mass.) who were 3-for-5 and 2-for-4 on the day. Sophomore Albert Betances (Haverhill, Mass.) had solo home run going 1-for-2 off the bench for Elms.
Junior pitcher Dan Ingraham (Granby, Mass.) picked up the loss for the Blazers striking out three and giving up four runs.
