Newbury College Student Athlete Advisory Committee Lends a Hand at 2007 Boston Marathon Jimmy Fund Walk

Fourteen Newbury student-athletes showed their support in the
fight against cancer by volunteering to work at the 19th annual
Boston Marathon Jimmy Fund Walk on Sunday,
September 16, 2007. The student athletes that volunteered make up
part of the Newbury College Student Athlete Advisory
Committee (SAAC), an NCAA sanctioned program that’s
goal is to enhance the overall student-athlete experience by
promoting opportunity, protecting student-athlete welfare, and
fostering a positive student-athlete environment. The Nighthawk
SAAC program is committed to taking on community service projects
in an effort to give back to the community around them.
Thousands of walkers logged their miles along the historic route
of the Boston Marathon, setting a fundraising record of
approximately $6.3 million this year. The Nighthawk volunteers
helped manage the final refueling station en route to the Copley
Square finish line. The volunteers handed out beverages and snacks
as well as gave support by cheering on and encouraging the walkers
and runners that passed by. The smiles on the faces of both the
walkers and Jimmy Fund staff said it all – it’s amazing
the impact that one person can have when they want to make a
difference.
