#3 Becker 2 #6 Mitchell 0

LEICESTER, Mass. - Freshman forward Alexandra Fernandes (Tucson, AZ) tallied two goals and goaltender Shannon Tibbetts (Warren, MA) made four saves as the Becker College Hawks defeated the Mitchell Mariners 2-0 today at Alumni Field in the first round of the New England Collegiate Conference women's soccer tournament.

The Hawks broke thru the scoreboard when Fernandes split the Mitchell defense for a break-a-way goal past Mariner keeper Brittany O'Neil (Old Saybrook, CT) at the eleven minute mark of the first half. The team played the remainder of the first half scoreless as the Hawks held a slim 1-0 lead at the half.

Becker doubled their lead in the 53rd minute on Fernandes' second score of the game. Alex broke down the left hand side and buried the ball in the right hand corner for a 2-0 lead.

Hawks' keeper Tibbetts preserved her third straight shut-out late in the game with two great saves. First midfielder Jessica Brandt (Waterbury, CT) had a drive from the right side that Tibbett's tipped high and then freshman Nicole Hoxie (Winsted, CT) had a point blank shot that Shannon gobbled up.

The Hawks (7-9-1) will travel to the number two seed Lesley College (15-3-1) on Saturday, November 1st for semi-final action. The Mariners finished their season with a 5-11-1 record.
