Newbury's Monteiro and Daniel Webster's Bosques Earn Women's Basketball Recognition
BROOKLINE, Mass.-Senior guard Ashley Monteiro (Cambridge, Mass./Cambridge Rindge and Latin) became the third Newbury student-athlete, second this season, to be named to the D3Hoops Team of the Week.
The Cambridge native helped lead the Newbury women’s basketball team to their third New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) tournament appearance. In the Nighthawks final game of the regular season against Southern Vermont College, Monteiro set a new career game-high, draining 10 treys for 30 points leading Newbury to the 87-82 victory. On the week, she shot 48% from the field, averaging 20 points per game, and helped guide the Nighthawks to their first home post-season game in school history.
Earlier this season junior guard Morganna Machado (Attleboro, Mass./Attleboro) earned D3Hoops Team of the Week honors in week four with a career game-high 26 points. Sophomore center Catherine O’Connell (Quincy, Mass./North Quincy) was the first Newbury student-athlete to earn the honor in her freshman season (09-10).
NASHUA, N.H. – Daniel Webster College women's basketball standout Vanessa Bosques has been named to the New England Women's Basketball Association's (NEWBA) weekly honor roll.
Bosques, a junior shooting guard, averaged 21 points, 4.7 rebounds, 2.0 assists, 1.0 blocks, and 1.7 steals while shooting 57-percent from the field as the Eagles completed a 3-0 playoff week culminating with the New England Collegiate Conference tournament championship.
Bosques, named the NECC tournament most valuable player, notched 27 points on 11 of 19 shooting including three three-pointers in the title game, a 64-52 victory over Lesley University on Saturday, February 26th. She added three steals, two blocks, two assists and two rebounds as the Eagles win their first ever conference championship.
Bosques opened the week with 25 points (10-15 fg, 3-7 3pt), five rebounds, two assists, a block and a steal in an 80-62 victory over Elms College in the NECC quarterfinals on February 22nd. She added 11 points, seven boards, two assists and a steal in a 72-48 victory over Mitchell College in the NECC semifinals on February 25th.
On the season, Bosques leads the team averaging 15.1 ppg, and adds 5.8 rebounds, 1.8 assists, 1.3 steals and is shooting 41-percent from the field and 31-percent from beyond the arc.
Under the guidance of first year Head Coach Kristin Kunzman, the Eagles (18-10) will play in their first ever NCAA tournament this coming weekend against an opponent to be determined.
